Two hundred lawyers representing 40 private firms and corporate law offices were honored earlier this month by MFY Legal Services for their volunteer counsel to indigent New Yorkers during a breakfast reception at the offices of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom.
During the reception, MFY's Matthew G. Leonard Award for Pro Bono Excellence was given to Mark E. Segall, a senior vice president and an associate general counsel at JPMorgan Chase. The award's namesake is the late Matthew G. Leonard, the head of litigation at Cantor Fitzgerald who was killed in the 9/11 terror attacks at the company's World Trade Center headquarters. Christopher D. Lamb, MFY's executive director, presented the award.
New York City Councilman Miguel Martinez received MFY's Champion of Justice Award.
For pro bono work "Above & Beyond," in keeping with the theme this Monday evening's benefit dinner for Sanctuary for Families at the Providence restaurant, attorneys from 18 Manhattan firms and a Westchester County law school are set to be honored for their assistance to women and children victimized by domestic violence.
The organization's Founder's Award will go to Jennifer C. Friedman, director of the Public Interest Law Center at Pace Law School in White Plains.

Thidemann and Jennifer M. Westerfield; associate Dara L. Sheinfeld of Davis Polk & Wardwell; partner Randy M. Mastro and associates Matthew S. Kahn and Farrah Pepper of Gibson Dunn & Crutcher; partner William C. Silverman of Greenberg Traurig; associate Daniel M. Boglioli of Kaye Scholer; and R. This year's northeast regional Thomas L. Sager Award, given to law firms by the Minority Corporate Counsel Association, went to Dewey & LeBoeuf.
The award, named for DuPont Vice President and General Counsel Thomas L. Sager, recognizes five law firms across the country for "improving the hiring, retention and promotion of minority and women attorneys," according to the association.
"The business interests of our firm and clients require representation that reflects the diversity of our employees and the communities in which Dewey & LeBoeuf operates, and we hold ourselves to a high standard in this regard," said the firm's chairman, Steven H. Davis.
He added, "Although we are proud of this accomplishment and view it as a barometer that our initiatives in diversity are making visible progress, we in no way see this as the 'finish line' in our journey."
Solo practitioner Mary T. Lucere was named Pro Bono Attorney of the Month for September 2008 by the Nassau County Bar Association.
The bar group's president, Peter Levy, cited her service through the organization's Volunteer Lawyers Project.
After working at several law firms, Ms. Lucere opened her own general law practice in Seaford. Besides belonging to the Nassau bar group, she is a member of the Suffolk County Bar Association and the Women's Bar Association of Suffolk County.
For its pro bono service to Rocking the Boat, the youth group's Whitehall Award was presented yesterday to Stroock & Stroock & Lavan, where some two dozen lawyers devoted 400-plus hours to the nonprofit organization, which teaches boatbuilding crafts to teens in the South Bronx.
Stroock attorneys in 10 of the firm's departments handled matters for Rocking the Boat such as intellectual property, entertainment, insurance, commercial lease issues and general corporate law counsel. In total, the volunteer service was valued at $250,000, according to a Stroock spokeswoman.
The Whitehall Award is named after the design of a small 19th-century boat, common in New York Harbor, that was the first design used by Rocking the Boat.
